What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a simple idea: a global day dedicated to generosity.
Founded as a response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it encourages people around the world to give back to causes they care about. Celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this movement has since grown into an international celebration of giving.
For churches, it’s more than that, though. Giving Tuesday provides a natural opportunity to invite church members to live out their faith through generosity, whether that’s through financial gifts, volunteer service, or acts of compassion within their communities.
Why Churches Should Participate
Many churches face challenges in encouraging consistent giving, especially as the year draws to a close. Budgets tighten, schedules fill up, and attention shifts to the holidays. Giving Tuesday offers a timely way to reenergize your congregation and reframe generosity as an act of worship.
By participating, your church can:
- Build momentum heading into year-end giving campaigns.
- Engage younger, digital-savvy audiences who are already active on Giving Tuesday platforms.
- Highlight the church’s ongoing mission and tangible impact in the community.
Giving Tuesday can also serve as a launchpad for deeper discipleship. When your church takes the lead in this global movement, you’re not only encouraging donations, you’re inviting your church to participate in the work God is already doing.
